Mutual Funds, Target Funds, 401(k)s, Roth IRAs, and other exciting investment thingies.

January 5, 2007

So… who wants to learn more? Leave a comment to vote for an article on any of the above investing thingies. I’m reworking the family’s asset allocation (i.e. do we invest in 100% stocks, or a mix of stocks and bonds, and what kind of stocks –small, medium, large?…or short, tall , grande and venti, to gen-xy slang it up a bit), and will write an article on these seemingly dull subjects if I get enough requests.

And in the spirit of full disclosure… I had to look up those starbuck sizes. Thanks quicksilverweb.

(I may spend a lot of time in coffee shops, but I bring my own mug, and don’t really like the burnt-tasting sbux blends. Lately, Coffee Society has been my hipster-spotting, homework-doing swill source. If the library would just let me eat & drink there, I wouldn’t need a rotating favourites list of coffee shops.)

  1. Hi. I would like to know more about Mutual Funds. I’m considering an investment in Ethical Mutual Funds.

    http://www.ethicalfunds.com

I am also considering putting some money into a short term investment (about 1 year). I would like to yeild some interest, but mostly I’d like to sock it away for a bit, until I have a good reason to spend it, that doesn’t involve new items that will pretty in the new apartment K and I are moving to, or new items that will look good on me as I sit alone in the new apartment we are moving to.

(In other words, for maybe going back to school. Which means the money will maybe feel good inside my brain, and probably cause a few wrinkles and grey hairs while being used.)

I recently opted into my work’s pension plan, and also started socking away a wee bit into Canada Savings Bonds that are held as a Canada RSP (which, if I’m not mistaken, is somewhat tax sheltered..)

But really, I’m largely uninformed on investing, which is ironic, considering my partner works in a bank. If you had roughly $500 a month to stick, where would you stick it? (and why?)

  2. Like your style – its edgey….the starbucks comments are pretty realistic. However, i did buy some pre-ground starbucks breakfast blend at costco before Christmas because I broke our grinder. It wasn’t bad at all. Would like to hear your thoughts on mutual funds and load/front or back or/no load from bank???

  3. I want to learn if a Roth IRA is good for me. What are the main advantages/disadvantages/differences from a 401k?

    Thanks!

  4. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. This is very useful.
